TOWSON, MD — Marlo Tersigni (Leominster,
MA/Lawrence Academy) cashed in on a free-position shot
with 1:01 left to play today, scoring the goal that snapped a 9-9
tie and allowed Goucher to defeat St. Mary's (Md.), 10-9, in the
opening round of the 2007 Capital Athletic Conference championship
tournament.
With the win, the Gophers (8-7) advance to play top-seeded
Salisbury in the tournament semifinals on Tuesday. The Sea Gulls
were victorious in another first-round contest played today, 24-2
over Marymount.
The Gophers and Seahawks (8-8) were never separated by more than a
goal until Sandy Okun (Stevenson, MD/McDonough
School) tallied the final goal of the first half to
provide Goucher with a 5-3 lead at the break. Okun scored again
4:36 into the second half to put the Gophers ahead 6-3.
The Seahawks took their only lead of the second half on a goal by
Katy Perry with 13:48 remaining that snapped a 7-7 deadlock. A goal
by Kate Knitter (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) with
10:22 left to play created an 8-8 tie and the Gophers regained the
lead on an unassisted goal by Brittany Foster (Portland,
ME/Portland) with 9:06 showing on the clock.
A goal by Emily Norris of the Seahawks with 5:06 remaining made the
score 9-9 — the sixth tie of the contest — and set the
stage for Tersigni's game-winning goal.
Emily Blatter (Lexington, VA/Rockbridge County)
supplied the Gophers with their first three goals of the contest,
boosting her team-leading total for the season to 55.
