SALISBURY, MD — Goucher accomplished something
against Salisbury today in the semifinals of the 2007 Capital
Athletic Conference championship tournament that no team has done
in more than six years — but the top-seeded Sea Gulls, who
are pursuing their fifth straight CAC title, still managed to
defeat the Gophers, 20-13.
The 13 goals is the most a Salisbury team has allowed in 111 games
— since defeating Mary Washington, 14-13, back on April 11,
2001. In 18 games this season, the Sea Gulls (17-1) have
surrendered 10 or more goals only three times — and won all
three of those games.
Sue Ackerman had a huge game for Salisbury, which will host Mary
Washington in the CAC championship game on Friday. The junior
attacker tallied four goals and was awarded five assists, and had a
hand in three of the six goals the Sea Gulls scored in succession
after the Gophers (8-8) jumped out to a 3-1 lead.
Katie Simmons and Stephanie Shores both contributed three goals to
the victory.
Emily Blatter (Lexington, VA/Rockbridge County)
furnished the Gophers with four goals and an equal number of
assists to finish the season with 59 goals and 36 assists. She also
surpassed 200 career points with her eight-point performance
today.
Marlo Tersigni (Leominster, MA/Lawrence Academy)
scored three times for Goucher, while Whitney Groseclose
(Boyce, VA/Mercersburg Academy) added two goals and a pair
of assists.
The Sea Gulls finished with a 41-24 edge in shots.
