TOWSON, Md. - In much the same fashion and by the exact same score that Goucher defeated Rowan last season, the Gophers were beaten in the rematch this afternoon. An unassisted goal by Carol Meseroll with :58 remaining in regulation snapped a 14-14 tie and provided the Profs with a 15-14 victory.
To pull out the one-goal victory, Rowan (7-2) had to outscore Goucher, 6-1, over the final 12:27. Only a year ago, the Gophers trailed the Profs, 14-11, with 11:36 remaining before tallying the final four goals of the contest to emerge with a 15-14 triumph.
The Gophers (1-7), who were looking for their first win since the season-opening 18-16 victory over Guilford, assumed its biggest lead of today's game when Marlo Tersigni (Worcester, MA/Lawrence Academy) and Emily Blatter (Lexington, VA/Rockbridge County) collected unassisted goals in the opening 3:57 of the second half, making the score 10-3.
The only other time in the second half that Goucher was able to string together back-to-back goals was when Blatter notched her third goal midway through the period and, less than two minutes later, picked up an assist on a goal by Sandy Okun (Stevenson, MD/McDonogh School). Okun's goal put the Gophers ahead by four, 13-9.
The Profs caught the Gophers at 13-13 on an unassisted goal by Lauren Crennan with 9:25 left to play and went ahead for the first time when a free-position shot by Crennan went in with 4:52 showing on the clock.
Tersigni supplied the goal - her career-high sixth of the game - that created the 14-14 tie.
In extending their winning streak to six games, the Profs finished with a 34-25 edge in shots.
