TOWSON, Md. - Goucher tuned up for its appearance in the upcoming
Landmark Conference championship tournament by shutting down
Scranton, 8-7, this afternoon in Gopher Stadium.
The Gophers (5-9, 4-1 Landmark) never trailed, but saw their lead
reduced to a single goal when Scranton's Caroline Pryor tallied an
unassisted goal with 1:40 left to play. Even though the Royals
(8-8, 1-4 Landmark) controlled the ensuing draw, time expired
before they could get off a shot.
Brittany Foster (Portland, ME/Portland) went the
distance in goal for Goucher, making 13 saves. It's the first time
all season that the Gophers held an opponent below 10 goals.
Goucher jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opening 20:19. One of the
goals was by Emily Blatter (Lexington, VA/Rockbridge
County), and it not only extended her goal-scoring streak
to 41 games, the second-longest in NCAA Division III history, but
it was also the 200th of the senior attacker's career with the
Gophers. She's only the fourth player in the history of the
school's women's lacrosse program to score 200 goals during her
career.
The Royals trailed 5-2 at the end of the first half.
Goucher will enter the conference tournament as the No. 2 seed and
will host third-seeded Drew in the semifinals on Tuesday at 4:00.
