Gophers Remain Stuck on Four Goals, Bow to Spartans

this afternoon turned into goals as head coach Katie Trainor's
squad enjoyed a 4-2 lead with 7:56 remaining in the first half. The
rest of the way, however, the Gophers were held scoreless by the
Spartans, who caught up by halftime and then pulled away in the
second half for a 9-4 victory.
Freshman midfielder Hannah Khin (Portsmouth, N.H./Portsmouth) scored Goucher's first three goals, including the one that put the Gophers (2-3) ahead 3-2 with 11:04 to go before halftime. Just over three minutes later, Colleen Cole (Holliston, Mass./Northfield Mt. Hermon School) set up a goal by Becca Smith (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) that made the score 4-2.
Kimberly Wayson accounted for all four of York's goals in the opening period and it was her goal off of a free-position shot with 3:09 showing on the clock that had the two teams knotted up a 4-4 at halftime.
Wayson scored two more times for the Spartans (3-2) in the second half as she finished with six goals on 10 shots.
The Gophers got off 17 shots in the second half, but starting goalie Kelsey Evans of the Spartans made 11 saves in the period before being relieved with 3:10 remaining. Evans also turned away four of Goucher's shots in the first half.
Senior Gia Thomas (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel Area) was in goal for Goucher for the entire 60 minutes and was credited with 10 saves.
The last time the Gophers scored as few as four goals in a game was in a 17-4 loss to Salisbury on April 25, 2006.
