by Redlands to register a 15-12 victory over the Bulldogs tonight
and complete its Spring Break trip to California with a 2-0
record.
The Gophers (4-3) trailed only once in the game and that was when Anna Moriarty's goal put the Bulldogs (5-3) up 3-2 after 7:55. Just over a minute later, however, Colleen Cole (Holliston, Mass./Northfield Mt. Hermon School) set up a goal by Becca Smith (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) that created a 3-3 tie and started a run of five consecutive goals by Goucher.
Cole tallied the next two goals of the contest, both times with free-position shots. An unassisted goal by Hannah Khin (Portsmouth, N.H./Portsmouth) extended Goucher's lead to 6-3 midway through the first half and then a free-position shot by Smith resulted in a goal that put the Gophers ahead 7-3 with 11:05 remaining before halftime.
After a free-position shot by Diana Frey turned into Redlands' fourth goal, the Gophers scored the final three goals of the period — including one by Cindy Villarreal (Silver Spring, Md./Wheaton) with :07 showing on the clock — for a 10-4 advantage at the end of the first half.
Goucher achieved its biggest lead of the contest when Smith stuck her fourth goal with 11:42 left to play, putting head coach Katie Trainor's squad up 15-7. The Bulldogs used the remaining time to score five times, getting as close as 15-12 on an unassisted goal by Christy Smith with 3:20 showing on the clock.
