TOWSON, Md. — A junior thrower on the women's track and
field team, a sophomore attacker from the women's lacrosse team and
a freshman sprinter/jumper on the men's track and field team are
the three student-athletes from Goucher who were recognized today
by the Landmark Conference as Players of the Week for their
respective sports for March 15-21.
Abby Cooney (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional) was selected as the top female performer in field events in the Landmark Conference following her performance at the Battleground Relays, which included becoming only the second thrower in the history of Goucher's women's outdoor track and field program to surpass 125-feet in the hammer throw. She placed first in that event with a throw of 129-feet, 10-inches.
Cooney also placed fifth in the shot put (32-feet, 2.75-inches) and seventh in the discus (100-feet, 7-inches).
Becca Smith (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) was chosen as the Landmark's Offensive Player of the Week in the sport of women's lacrosse after she became the second Goucher player this season to tally as many as eight goals in a game. She scored five times in the first half and supplied the Gophers with three additional goals in the second half of their 13-11 victory over Whittier.
In the two games the Gophers played on their Spring Break trip to California, Smith was credited with 12 goals and an assist. She scored four times off the five free-position shots she was awarded in the two contests.
The honor for being top male performer in track events in the Landmark Conference for the week went to Will Evans III (Baltimore, Md./Overlea). He was awarded first place and broke the outdoor school record in the high jump as one of three individuals who were successful at 5-feet, 10-inches.
In addition, Evans placed fifth overall in the 100-meter dash (:11.60) and ran a leg on Goucher's sprint medley relay team that recorded a time of 3:43.30, which is a new outdoor school record and landed the quartet in third place.
