Bradley Shines on Defense: Seven Ground Balls, Four Caused Turnovers
SELINSGROVE, Pa. — Goucher's Colleen Cole
(Holliston, Mass./Northfield Mt. Hermon School) became the
first player in the Landmark Conference to surpass 50 goals this
season today, but her five-goal performance against Susquehanna
wasn't enough to prevent the Gophers from suffering a 17-7 setback
at the hands of the Crusaders.
Cole's first goal of the contest knotted the score at 2-2 with 16:11 left to play in the first half, but neither the junior midfielder nor the Gophers (6-9, 1-3 Landmark) were able to tally their next goal until nearly four minutes into the second half. The Crusaders (10-5, 3-1 Landmark) took a 3-2 lead on an unassisted goal by Lindsey Derstine and piled on 10 additional goals before time expired in the opening period.
Susquehanna also scored first in the second half, going ahead 14-2 thanks to a goal by Sarah Wright before Cole ended Goucher's scoreless drought that lasted 20:06 by sticking her 50th goal of the season. According to NCAA statistics, only 34 Division III players had scored at least 50 goals through games played through April 18.
Cole went on to score three more times in the second half, but the closest the Gophers got at any point during the period was when Hannah Khin (Portsmouth, N.H./Portsmouth) tallied her 31st goal of the season off of a free-position shot, making the score 15-6 with 12:04 remaining.
One of the bright spots on defense for Goucher was the play of sophomore Erin Bradley (Framingham, Mass./Marian) who was credited with a career-high seven ground balls and four caused turnovers.
