TOWSON, Md. – Senior goalkeeper Brittany Foster
(Portland, Maine/Portland) made 11 saves for Goucher in
the first half of today's Landmark Conference game against Catholic
and yet the Gophers still trailed 9-3. The Cardinals scored nine
more times in the second half to earn an 18-7 victory.
The Gophers (4-6, 0-2 Landmark) got on the scoreboard first on an unassisted goal by Marlo Tersigni (Boston, Mass./Lawrence Academy) 8:41 into the contest, but they held that advantage for just :31 before Catholic's Mary Swarthout tied the score at 1-1 by converting a free-position shot. An unassisted goal by Colleen Cole (Holliston, Mass./Northfield Mt. Hebron School) put Goucher back in the lead with 18:45 remaining in the first half.
The Cardinals (11-2, 3-0 Landmark) caught the Gophers again :54 later on a free-position goal by Lindsey Davenport and then went ahead to stay on a goal by Laura Haring with 16:17 remaining before halftime. Over a 24-minute stretch that started with Davenport's game-tying goal and extended into the second half, the defending Landmark Conference champions outscored head coach Katie Trainor's squad, 11-1.
The game featued the two players ranked first and second in the Landmark Conference in points per contest this season. Kate Robinson, who went in as the leader by averaging 5.08 points in Catholic's first 12 games, supplied the Cardinals with five goals and a pair of assists for a total of seven points. Tersigni was right behind her at 4.67 points per game, but she was limited to two goals.
Foster was credited with two additional saves in the second half to finish with 13 as the Cardinals outshot the Gophers, 42-22.
With the victory, Catholic extended its winning streak in the all-time series between the two rivals to four games. The Gophers have dropped all three games the two teams have played since the formation of the Landmark Conference and haven't defeated the Cardinals since an 18-13 triumph in the quarterfinals of the 2006 Capital Athletic Conference postseason tournament.
