TOWSON, Md. – Becca Smith (Leesburg,
Va./Heritage) tallied a career-high six goals and
Brittany Foster (Portland, Maine/Portland) made 13
saves today as Goucher picked up its first Landmark Conference win
of the season, an 18-10 triumph over visiting Susquehanna.
The Gophers (5-6, 1-2 Landmark) broke out on top 7-0, getting goals from six different players in the opening 16:51 before the Crusaders (6-5, 0-3 Landmark) got on the scoreboard for the first time on an unassisted goal by Sarah Wright. By halftime, Smith had already scored four times and picked up assists on goals by Sandy Okun (Stevenson, Md./McDonogh School) and Jenny Lucey (Newbury, N.H./Kimball Union Academy), helping Goucher open up a 13-4 advantage.
Smith stuck two more goals and was awarded another assist in the second half to finish with a total of nine points. The freshman midfielder was one of six multiple goal-scorers for the Gophers: Lucey and Mary Lambert (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) both contributed three goals to the victory, while Okun, Marlo Tersigni (Boston, Mass./Lawrence Academy) and Cindy Villarreal (Kensington, Md./Wheaton) added two goals apiece.
The Crusaders finished with a 36-25 edge in shots, but were only able to get four balls by Foster until they scored the last three goals of the contest in the final 7:06. This was the seventh time so far this season the senior goalkeeper reached double figures in saves during a game.
The game was stopped with :54 remaining due to unplayable field conditions.
