Shaner Makes Career-High 17 Saves in Season-Opening Setback
TOWSON, Md. — Despite a 17-save effort out of sophomore goalie Ashley Shaner (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove), Goucher dropped its opening game of the season as York pinned a 16-7 setback on head coach Katie Trainor's Gophers today on Beldon Field.
Hannah Khin (Portsmouth, N.H./Portsmouth) accounted for Goucher's first two goals as the two teams were deadlocked at 2-2 nine minutes into the contest. Khin also picked up an assist on a goal by Becca Smith (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) with 1:39 remaining before halftime, but an unassisted goal by Kim Wayson with :26 showing on the clock provided the visiting Spartans (2-0) with a 6-3 advantage at the break.
York's lead grew to 8-3 when Wayson notched her third goal of the game just 1:14 into the second half. After an unassisted goal by Erin Reifsnyder (Austin, Texas/St. Andrews Episcopal) allowed the Gophers (0-1) to close to within 8-4, the Spartans expanded their lead to a comfortable margin of 14-4 with a run of six unanswered goals over a span of nearly 14 minutes.
Khin was the only multiple-goal scorer for Goucher as she took four shots and produced three goals. Her final goal was sandwiched between goals by teammates Mary Lambert (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) and Colleen Cole (Holliston, Mass./Northfield Mt. Hermon School), and that three-goal run got the Gophers back to within 14-7 with 9:38 left to play.
The Spartans finished with a 35-17 edge in shots.
The 17 saves is a career-high for Shaner, who appeared in 13 games for the Gophers last season as a freshman, and the most for a Goucher goalie since Brittany Foster stopped 20 shots in a game against Drew on April 29, 2009.
