Seahawks Regain Control in Second Half, Roll to 17-8 Win

Gophers Get Back in Game with Four-Goal Rally to End First Half

TOWSON, Md. — Goucher bunched four goals into the final minute of the first half to knock what had been a seven-goal deficit down to 9-6, but St. Mary's (Md.) regained control by scoring the first five goals of the second half and came away with a 17-8 non-conference victory over head coach Katie Trainor's squad today on Beldon Field.

The goal Becca Smith (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) tallied off a free-position shot 4:20 into the contest created a 1-1 tie, but it would be the only one that went up on Goucher's side of the scoreboard until after the Seahawks (8-2) were able to open up an 8-1 advantage on a goal by Aubrey Mirkin with 9:12 remaining in the first half. Hannah Khin (Portsmouth, N.H./Portsmouth) made the score 8-2 when she stuck an unassisted goal with 6:50 showing on the clock, but St. Mary's answered with a goal by Lauren Bennett to once again assume a seven-goal lead.

Colleen Cole (Holliston, Mass./Northfield Mt. Hermon School) got Goucher's four-goal rally in the final minute of the first half started with an unassisted goal. Erin Reifsnyder (Austin, Texas/St. Andrews Episcopal) controlled the ensuing draw, which led to her scoring a goal off a free-position shot with :40 left in the period. The subsequent possession for the Gophers concluded with Khin depositing a free-position shot into the net, reducing the lead for St. Mary's to 9-5; Reifsnyder's unassisted goal with :10 remaining got Goucher even closer.

After scoring four times in the final minute of the first half, however, the Gophers (5-4) were able to produce only two goals the entire second half. By the time Khin scored the first one with 8:27 left to play, the Seahawks had added five goals to their total to open up a commanding 14-6 lead.

Eight different players scored goals for St. Mary's, which has strung together six consecutive victories since a 12-10 loss to Washington (Md.) back on March 2. Mirkin contributed five goals to the win and Maggie Macleay furnished the Seahawks with four goals. Although she didn't score a goal, Lauriann Parker was credited with six assists.

Khin and Reifsnyder finished with three goals apiece for Goucher.

With the two in-state rivals combining to get off 69 shots, both goalies were kept busy. Colleen Simpson, who went the distance in the net for St. Mary's, made plays on 16 Goucher shots, while Ashley Shaner (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) made 14 saves for the Gophers.
