Royals Never Surrender Lead, Finish with 14-12 Victory

Khin Opens Scoring for Goucher, Tacks On Four Additional Goals
SCRANTON, Pa. — Goucher, which trailed by as many as four goals in the first half and by five at one point during the second half, found itself tied with Scranton at 10-10 when Mary Lambert (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) capped a run of five consecutive goals by the Gophers by sticking an unassisted goal with 16:51 left to play.
Even after the Royals deposited the next two goals to go back in front, 12-10, head coach Katie Trainor's squad responded with two goals of its own to again pull even, this time at 12-12 with 9:14 remaining in today's Landmark Conference contest.
Scranton finally took the lead for good on a goal by Kaitlin Lazorko with 8:19 showing on the clock and the Royals went on to defeat the Gophers, 14-12.
The Gophers (5-5, 0-1 Landmark) fell behind 5-1 at the outset as an unassisted goal by Hannah Khin (Portsmouth, N.H./Portsmouth) was all they could muster on offense during the first 17 minutes. They closed to within 6-4 when Khin scored twice within a span of less than two minutes, but Katie Slade's goal with 6:06 remaining in the first half provided the Royals (6-2, 1-0 Landmark) with a 7-4 cushion at the break.
Scranton assumed its biggest lead of the game when Lazorko scored off of a free-position shot 4:43 into the second half, making the score 10-5, but Khin did the same thing less than two minutes later to get Goucher's five-goal run started.
Katie Slade, who contributed five goals to the victory, scored the goal that ended the 5-0 spurt and put Scranton ahead 11-10 midway through the period. An unassisted goal by Kristin Pickell with 11:36 remaining to be played made it 12-10 in favor of the Royals.
The Gophers got one of those goals back when Lambert scored with 10:32 left to play and then the goal Colleen Cole (Holliston, Mass./Northfield Mt. Hermon School) tallied off a free-position shot with 9:14 showing on the clock created the 12-all deadlock.
Khin took nine shots in the game was furnished the Gophers with five goals. Lambert, Cole and Erin Reifsnyder (Austin, Texas/St. Andrews Episcopal) added two goals apiece.
Hannah Brown (Pinedale, Wyo./Dunn School) was active in just the third start of her young career. The freshman midfielder scored a goal, gathered up a team-high six ground balls, controlled two draws and forced two opponent turnovers.
Scranton finished with a 36-30 advantage in shots in the first Landmark Conference game of the season for both teams.
