TOWSON, Md. — During the nine-year period that Goucher and Catholic were both competing in the Capital Athletic Conference, the Gophers prevailed in 10 of the 15 games between the two schools.
Since both departed the CAC, however, there's been a drastic change of fortune. They met for the sixth time as members of the Landmark Conference this afternoon and with an 18-8 victory, the Cardinals improved to 6-0 in those contests.
The Gophers (5-6, 0-2 Landmark) were down 4-0 before getting on the scoreboard for the first time on an unassisted goal by Erin Reifsnyder (Austin, Texas/St. Andrews Episcopal) 9:12 into the contest.
Following another four-goal run by the nationally ranked Cardinals (8-2, 2-0 Landmark), Hannah Khin (Portsmouth, N.H./Portsmouth) tallied back-to-back goals for Goucher and before an unassisted goal by Colleen Cole (Holliston, Mass./Northfield Mt. Hermon School) had the Gophers trailing only 8-4 with 6:22 remaining before halftime.
Before time expried in the first half, however, Lindsey Davenport restored Catholic's lead to five by sticking at unassisted goal.
Davenport also opened the scoring in the second half, finishing a fastbreak six seconds into the period that was set up by Mary Swarthout's draw control. The Cardinals, who entered today's contest at No. 11 in the IWLCA's Division III national rankings, were able to tack on five more goals to open up a commanding 15-4 advantage before Cole notched Goucher's first goal of the second half off of a free-postion shot.
The Gophers managed to get as close as 15-8 on a goal by Sara Miller (Baldwin, Md./Dulaney) with 7:20 left to play, but the Cardinals thwarted the comeback attempt by scoring the final three goals of the contest.
Swarthout, Davenport and Katie Buonpastore supplied Catholic with four goals apiece. Khin deposited three shots in the net for the Gophers, boosting her Landmark Conference-leading total to 45 goals this season.
Both starting goalkeepers went the distance. For Catholic, Gabby Sena made nine of her season-high 15 saves in the second half; for Goucher, Ashley Shaner (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) turned away 10 shots in the opening 30 minutes and finished with a 13-save performance.
