Two Unassisted Goals by Ossorio Wipe Out Early 2-0 Deficit
TOWSON, Md. — After surrendering two goals in the opening 58 seconds, Goucher held Shendoah to just one additional score the remainder of the first half tonight on the way to recording a 10-8 victory over the Hornets.
Within 49 seconds of falling behind 2-0, the Gophers (2-4) countered with a pair of unassisted goals by Anneke Ossorio (Lafayette, Colo./Kent Denver School) to even the score at 2-2. The game was only 2:37 old when Hannah Khin (Portsmouth, N.H./Portsmouth) stuck a free-position shot to put Goucher ahead to stay.
After an unassisted goal by Erin Reifsnyder (Austin, Texas/St. Andrews Episcopal) extended the home team's lead to 4-2 with 24:50 remaining in the first half, neither team scored again for more than 16 minutes. The Hornets (3-2), who saw their three-game winning streak come to a halt, ended the drought and closed to within 4-3 on a goal by Samantha Sisson, but the Gophers answered by scoring the final two goals of the period. The first one came on a free-position shot by Reifsnyder and then Khin ran the length of the field to put a shot past the Shenandoah goalie with :01 showing on the clock to put Goucher up 6-3 at the break.
The Gophers never coughed up the lead in the second half, but the Hornets did get as close as 8-7 on a goal off of a free-position shot by Corrinne Kosmowski midway through the period. Becca Smith (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) accounted for the next two goals, restoring Goucher's advantage to three with just 5:13 left to play.
Ashley Shaner (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) delivered a strong performance in goal for the Gophers, making seven saves in the second half to raise her total for the game to 12.
Goucher prevailed despite being outshot, 29-23; the Gophers also came up short in the battle for ground balls, 26-24, and in draw controls, 11-8.
