SELINSGROVE, Pa. — Despite a career-high 21-save performance out of junior goalie Ashley Shaner (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove), Goucher suffered a 15-7 loss to Susquehanna this afternoon in a game the Gophers absolutely had to win to keep their hopes of qualifying for the upcoming Landmark Conference postseason tournament alive.
Shaner made 16 of her 21 saves in the first half, during which Susquehanna outshot Goucher, 31-7. Still the Crusaders (12-1, 2-1 Landmark) tallied the first seven goals of the contest and kept the Gophers off the scoreboard until Becca Smith (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) stuck an unassisted goal with 8:40 remaining in the first half.
By halftime, the Crusaders were ahead 11-1.
A four-goal run in the second half that started with a pair of goals by Anneke Ossorio (Lafayette, Colo./Kent Denver School) allowed the Gophers (4-10, 0-4 Landmark) to close to within 12-5 with 13:11 left to play.
Ally Bauer and Michelle McGinniss both contributed three goals to the victory as 11 different players had at least one goal or an assist for Susquehanna, which finished with a 46-23 advantage in shots.
The 21 saves by Shaner is the most by a Goucher goalie since Brittany Foster stopped 22 shots in a 15-12 loss to Colorado College back on March 19, 2008.
