Gophers Score Final Four Goals, But It's Too Little Too Late
TOWSON, Md. — With a chance to even the all-time series with York (Pa.), Goucher opened its 2013 slate in dreary weather today. The nationally-ranked Spartans had too much offensive firepower for the Gophers, earning an 18-10 win.
Out of the gate, York (1-0) scored just 33 seconds into the game to take an early advantage.
The ninth-ranked IWLCA team raced out to a 5-0 lead in the first 6:57 before Hannah Khin (Portsmouth, N.H./Portsmouth) got Goucher (0-1) on the scoreboard. It was the first of the senior's four goals on the day.
The Spartans responded 20 seconds later after winning the ensuing draw control, keying a three-goal run.
Despite going into intermission down 14-4, Goucher outscored York in the second half 6-4. The Gophers ended the game by scoring the last four goals.
In addition to Khin, four other Goucher players found the back of the net. Rita Meissner (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers) and Erin Reifsnyder (Austin, Texas/St. Andrew's Episcopal) each had a pair of goals. Anneke Ossorio (Lafayette, Colo. / Kent Denver School) and Brooke Burnside (Bridgehampton, N.Y./Bridgehampton) each added one.
10 different Spartans scored, led by four from the school's all-time leading scorer, Kim Wayson. Wayson also added three assists.
York is now 4-2 all-time against Goucher and has been vicotorious in each of the last four meetings after ceding the first two of the series.
