Five-Goal First-Half Run Puts Gophers on Top for Good
TOWSON, Md. — Less than 24 hours after earning a win against Virginia Wesleyan, Goucher was back in action in non-conference play. The Gophers never trailed, beating St. Joseph's (Maine) 16-4.
Anneke Ossorio (Lafayette, Colo./Kent Denver School) got the Gophers (4-2) on the scoreboard first with a free position goal just 44 seconds into the game.
Less than a minute later, Hannah Khin (Portsmouth, N.H./Portsmouth) scored in the same manner to get the hosts on top 2-0.
St. Joseph's (2-1) scored the game's next two goals just 27 seconds apart to level the score, but Monks would not score for the remaining 27:05 in the half.
During that time, the Gophers rallied to score the next five, taking a lead the team would never relinquish. Erin Reifsnyder (Austin, Texas/St. Andrew's Episcopal) put Goucher ahead, then Khin and Hannah Brown (Pinedale, Wyo./Dunn School) each added two insurance goals.
Coming out of the intermission down 7-2, the Monks broke their scoreless drought just over a minute into the second half, but the Gophers received three more goals from Reifsnyder, two apiece from Khin and Rita Meissner (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers) and one goal each from Ossorio and Brooke Burnside (Bridgehampton, N.Y./Bridgehampton) to cement the victory.
Ashley Shaner (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) stopped 11 shots, including four of five free position attempts, in the win.
The Gophers, on the other hand, were 10 of 16 on free-position attempts.
Goucher has now won three straight games for the first time since closing its 2011 regular season with three wins.
