Gophers Once Again Successful From Eight-Meter Arc
SCRANTON, Pa. — In Goucher's Landmark Conference opener, Scranton took control early, coasting to a 12-6 victory.
For the first time in nine games, Goucher (6-5, 0-1 Landmark) did not score first. In fact, it wasn't until the seventh goal of the game that the Gophers got on the scoreboard.
Scranton (6-3, 1-1 Landmark) raced out to a 6-0 edge, courtesy of three of Emily Goss's six first-half goals, never looking back to earn the victory. The midfielder finished with seven on the day.
Hannah Khin (Portsmouth, N.H./Portsmouth) finally got the Gophers into the goal column with a free position strike 19:11 into the contest.
Goucher's only other first half goal came from Megan Meluskey (Wilmington, Del./Concord).
Coming out of the intermission down 9-2, the Gophers cut the lead with goals from Anneke Ossorio (Lafayette, Colo./Kent Denver School) and Rita Meissner (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers), in the first 3:11, but the Royals stayed strong defensively, allowing only a pair of Khin goals the rest of the way.
Despite very even numbers in turnovers, shots and ground balls, the Gophers were done in by poor shooting, as Kathleen Smart stopped 15 of Goucher's 21 shots on goal.
With four free-position goals today the Gophers now have scored at least four in six of the last seven games.
