TOWSON, Md. — Sophie Smith (Lawrenceville, N.J./Madison) stuck three goals and seven other players got into the scoring act for Goucher in the first half of today's season-opening contest against Wesley.
The game was shortened by more than 11 minutes due to reduced visibilities caused by blowing snow, but that still left the Gophers enough time to tack on two more goals in the second half and claim a 13-2 victory over the Wolverines.
Jessica Borucki (Westminster, Md./North Carroll) and Anneke Ossorio (Lafayette, Colo./Kent Denver School) both scored for Goucher before Smith notched the first of her three goals just 4:18 into the contest. The freshman attacker/midfielder's second goal at 18:32 provided the Gophers (1-0) with a 6-0 lead and her third goal at 9:28 made it 10-0.
The Wolverines (0-1) got on the scoreboard for the first time with an unassisted goal by Mckenzie Marvel with 4:54 remaining before halftime, but they trailed 11-1 at the break.
Megan Meluskey (Wilmington, Del./Concord) picked up her second goal of the contest and Rita Meissner (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers) her third as Goucher was able to score twice in the second half before the game was stopped by the officials.
Meluskey and Smith each finished with a team-high five points, as Meluskey dished out three assists while Smith added two.
The Gophers outshot the Wolverines, 27-11.
Goucher's next game is Tuesday, Feb 25, at 4:30 PM in Westminster, Md. against McDaniel.
