TOWSON, Md. — Goucher jumped in front of Randolph in the opening minute this afternoon and never looked back, outshooting the WildCats 43-8 in a dominant 14-1 victory from Beldon Field.
Five of those goals, including the opener, came from freshman Jessica Borucki (Westminster, Md./North Carroll). She also picked up a team-high seven ground balls for the Gophers (2-1). Borucki has eight goals, one assist and 10 ground balls in her first three collegiate games.
All five of her goals today came in the opening 30 minutes, as Goucher took a 7-0 lead into the intermission. Sophie Smith (Lawrenceville, N.J./Madison) and Anneke Ossorio (Lafayette, Colo./Kent Denver School) added first half tallies, while Smith and Jojo Franklin (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver School) registered assists.
Randolph (0-1) got on the scoreboard on a Taylor Klevenz strike just over three minutes into the second half, but the Gophers ended the contest with seven unanswered goals.
Three of those came from the stick of Dani McCreary (Upper Marlboro, Md./Bishop McNamara), who recorded her first collegiate hat trick. Franklin fired in two goals after the break, while Smith and Rita Meissner (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers) rounded out the scoring. Meissner also chipped in two assists.
Goucher was successful on 18 of 20 clearing attempts, while an aggressive defense led to only a 50 percent conversion rate (13-26) for the WildCats. The Gophers picked up caused turnovers on 19 of Randolph's 31 giveaways, led by a career-high five from Stefi Perry (Houston, Texas/Klein).
Perry and Claire Lippay (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown), meanwhile, each totaled six ground balls apiece. Goucher had a 44-17 advantage in ground balls for the afternoon. That is the most ground balls the Gophers have had in a game since they also had 44 against St. Mary's (Md.) on April 20, 2004.
Smith had 10 of Goucher's 43 shots, while Borucki and Franklin each added six. Emily Gill (White Hall, Md./North Harford) made two saves in the opening half to pick up her second victory. She was relieved in the second half by Bridget Den Boer (Sparta, N.J./Sparta), who totaled four stops.
The Gophers remain at home for their next contest, a 4 p.m. matchup against Misericordia on Tuesday.
