DOVER, Del. — Goucher launched its 2016 season successfully today as seven different players scored goals in a 15-6 victory over Wesley.
Four of Goucher's goals were scored by Jessica Borucki (Westminster, Md./North Carroll), and five of her teammates contributed two goals to the win. Before the game was even a minute old, Jojo Franklin (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver School), Megan Meluskey (Wilmington, Del./Concord) and Dani McCreary (Upper Marlboro, Md./Bishop McNamara) had each tallied the first of their two goals, staking the Gophers to a quick 3-0 lead.
Before the Wolverines (0-1) got on the scoreboard for the first time, head coach Ceri Miller's squad would tack on four more goals — Borucki's first, Meluskey's second and two by Sophie Smith (Lawrenceville, N.J./Madison) — and enjoy a 7-0 advantage midway through the first half.
An unassisted goal by Borucki with :31 showing on the clock provided the Gophers (1-0) with a 9-2 cushion at halftime. She also opened the scoring in the second half, sticking an unassisted goal at 21:39, and then tallied her fourth goal with 11:23 remaining. She also assisted second-half goals by McCreary and Zoe Merz (Westminster, Md./Westminster) to finish with six points.
Cassidy Flynn (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) accounted for two of Goucher's final three goals, scoring one of them off a free-position shot.
Stefi Perry (Houston, Texas/Klein) was credited with two draw controls, five caused turnovers and a career-high eight ground balls. This was the second time in the junior midfielder's career that she was responsible for five turnovers by the opponent.
The Gophers will play the first of their sevebn scheduled home games this season when they welcome McDaniel to Beldon Field on Tuesday. The opening draw is set for 4:30 p.m.
