Gophers Pound the Goal in Spring Break Opener
Junior Rachel Grosso (Haworth, NJ) submitted an all-around performance for the Gophers in a 15-5 loss to Centre College on the road during the women’s lacrosse (0-7, Landmark 0-0) first Spring Break trip contest.
DANVILLE, KY – Junior Rachel Grosso (Haworth, NJ) submitted an all-around performance for the Gophers in a 15-5 loss to Centre College on the road during the women's lacrosse (0-7, Landmark 0-0) first Spring Break trip contest.
The captain midfielder scored two goals, caused two turnovers and collected four groundballs in the game for the Gophers.
Fellow junior Bridget Den Boer (Sparta, NJ) led the Gophers with seven groundballs to accompany 16 saves in goal over 55 minutes. First-year Brittany Ransom finished the game off in goal for Goucher, making two saves.
In addition to Grosso's goals, first-year midfielders Alyssa Long (Pennsburg, PA), Allie Clay (Baltimore, MD) and Shannon Stull (Westminster, MD) scored a goal each. Long added another point on the day, assisting on Clay's goal in the first half. Sophomore Lauren Pirrung (New Windsor, MD) paced Goucher with three draw controls.
Senior Ellen Resinger led Centre with seven goals, six draw controls and three groundballs. Junior Hannah Bellamah chipped in with four goals, three assists, three caused turnovers and four groundballs for the Colonels.
Junior Natalie Marek played the entire game in net for Centre, making 11 saves on 16 shots faced.
How It Happened:
- Goucher fell behind 4-0 in the opening nine minutes despite getting the first two shots on goal in the game.
- The duo of Clay and Long hooked up in order to get the Gophers on the board with 15:35 remaining in the first half.
- The Colonels scored once more before Grosso netted her first goal of the afternoon.
- Centre increased its lead 7-2, before Stull sniped in a free position shot to help the Gophers close the gap, 7-3
- The Colonels improved their lead, 8-3 to close the first period.
- The Gophers put all nine of their shots on goal in the first half.
- Centre scored the first seven goals in the second half before Goucher broke the streak with Grosso's second goal of the game.
- The two teams remained at an impasse for the next 10 minutes before Long broke the silence with a free position goal with 58 seconds left on the clock.
- When the final buzzer sounded, the board read 15-5.
- Goucher put 16-of-19 shots on goal in the game, marking a season-high for the squad.
