Multiple Career Days Lift Gophers By Scots
The first-year duo of Shannon Stull (Westminster, MD) and Alyssa Long (Pennsburg, PA) combined for nine goals to lift the Gophers over Gordon College at Puett Field on Thursday afternoon.
SEWANEE, TN – The first-year duo of Shannon Stull (Westminster, MD) and Alyssa Long (Pennsburg, PA) combined for nine goals to lift the Gophers over Gordon College at Puett Field on Thursday afternoon.
Stull was unstoppable on the day, scoring a career-high six goals while Long added a personal-best three goals to the Gopher (1-7, Landmark 0-0) effort. First year players, Lucy Keyser (Philadelphia, PA) and Allie Clay (Baltimore, MD), along with junior Elyse Pyle (Bridgewater, NJ) rounded out the scoring for Goucher with a goal each.
Senior Claire Lippay (Jenkintown, PA) was a force on defense, causing four turnovers and collecting a career-high nine groundballs. Pyle and sophomore Lauren Pirrung (New Windsor, MD) also chalked up career days with five and four groundballs, respectively.
Time in goal was split between junior Bridget Den Boer (Sparta, PA) and first-year Brittany Ransom (Centreville, MD). Den Boer played a majority of the minutes, making eight saves. Ransom earned her first career win at Goucher, finishing the game between the pipes.
Sophomore Olivia McCarrick led Gordon with four goals, three assists and a groundball. Senior MC Aston had a team-high two caused turnovers and chipped in with two goals.
First-year goalkeeper, Melanie Dwyer, accumulated nine saves over 60 minutes of play.
How It Happened:
- The Gophers fell behind 3-0 in the opening six minutes of the game.
- Pyle broke Goucher's silence with her first goal of the season with 23:45 to go in the first half.
- The Gophers rattled off three more goals over the course of five minutes to storm back and take the lead.
- The remainder of the half was a back-and-forth affair with Goucher finally taking hold of the lead 7-6 heading to the intermission.
- The Gophers came out firing in the second half, building a 9-6 lead via goals from Clay and Stull.
- Gordon tightened the game up with two goals in two minutes, bringing the Scots within one, 9-8.
- Long completed her hat trick to increase the Gopher lead once again, but it was wiped from the board by back-to-back goals from Gordon.
- Each team netted a goal over the next 11 minutes, keeping the game tied, 11-11 with 6:53 to go in the game.
- Stull scored her sixth goal of the game, netting a free position opportunity with 3:59 left in the game.
- The Gophers did not allow another shot on goal for the remainder of the game, and sealed their first win of the season, 12-11.
- Goucher held the advantage in groundballs (31-23) and shots on goal (21-19).
- Gordon boasted a lead in saves (9-8), draw controls (18-7) and shots (31-27).
