TOWSON, Md. - Goucher College women's lacrosse senior goalie Bridget Den Boer (Sparta, N.J.) matched a career-high with 23 saves, while sophomore Gabrielle Umstead (Chadds Ford, Pa.) had the first hat trick of her career on Wednesday afternoon against Meadille at frigid Beldon Field.
But, it wasn't enough, as the visiting Mavericks pulled out a 17-8 win over the Gophers. With the win, Medaille moved to 1-0 on the year, while Goucher fell to 0-5 with the defeat.
In the game, Medaille came out and opened a 9-1 lead on Goucher in the first half, a deficit that proved to be too much for the Gophers to come back from the rest of the day. Despite facing a sizeable deficit for most of the contest, Goucher kept fighting all match, cutting the deficit to five goals twice during the game (9-4 at halftime and 10-5 early in the second half).
On the offensive end for Goucher, Umstead led the way with her three-goal performance. The sophomore also had two assists to record five points for the afternoon, as she has already passed her goal total from a season ago in five games, scoring six (while adding seven assists).
Elsewhere, sophomore Alyssa Long (Pennsburg, Pa.) scored a pair of goals, as did fellow sophomore Shannon Stull (Westminster, Md.). Goucher's final goal scorer was by junior Danielle Nixon (Brunswick, N.J.) who tallied her first goal of the year in the contest. Meanwhile, first-year Soleil Gagne (Portsmouth, N.H.) recorded an assist on the day, as well.
In net, Den Boer once again kept the Gophers in it for most of the afternoon with her performance in the cage. Den Boer has now made double-digit saves in each game the Gophers have played in on the year, already making 93 saves for the season.
The Goucher College women's lacrosse team returns to action on Wednesday, as they host Frostburg State at Beldon Field. Things get underway at 4:30 p.m.
