Goucher Women's Lacrosse Explodes For 24 Goals In Win At Cedar Crest
ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Emily Flinn (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry), Julia Gazzola (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown), Alyssa Long (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) and Shannon Stull (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) combined for 11 goals and 11 assists to power Goucher College past Cedar Crest College 24-2 in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Saturday. The victory handed interim head coach Sarah Goodson her first win as a head coach in her coaching debut.
Flinn posted two goals and three assists for five points while Gazzola registered three tallies and two helpers for five points. Flinn, who added three ground balls, notched her first career helpers and now has three goals and three assists for six points in her first two collegiate games. Gazzola, who posted a goal and two assists in the season opener, now has four goals and four assists for eight points on the year. Gazzola also grabbed 10 draw controls in the match.
Long tallied two goals and career-high four assists for six points and Stull recorded four goals and two assists for six points. Long notched her eighth multi-goal performances and the dished out two or more assists for the second time in her career. Stull, who had one career assist coming into the season, now has three helpers through two games in her junior campaign. Stull has recorded 17 multi-goal performances including six with four goals or more in her career.
Soleil Gagne (Portsmouth, N.H./Portsmouth) registered her third career hat trick and added two ground balls and three draw controls. Mackenzie Nase (Weare, N.H./John Stark Regional) stuffed the stat sheet with two tallies, two ground balls, three draw controls and three caused turnovers while Camryn Agostino (South Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) also had two goals on the day.
The Gophers jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first seven minutes of the game. Gazzola (29:33), Gagne (29:21), Long (28:46), Gagne (25:18), Flinn (24:15) and Stull (23:20) each twinkled the twine to start the match.
After a Falcons tally, Nase got on the scoreboard for the first time at 22:29 before Stull found the back of the net on consecutive scores at 17:00 and 12:11 before Gazzola scored for the second time at 11:25 for a 10-1 lead.
Cedar Crest momentarily halted the Gophers run before Goucher closed the half by scoring the final six goals of the half. Stull (6:40), Gagne (4:42 & 0:39), Jordan Tice (Batavia, Ill./Batavia), Long (1:14) and Gazzola (0:27) each registered a marker in the final seven minutes to give Goucher a 15-2 lead at the break.
The Gophers scored all nine goals of the second half from Vida Fye (Takoma Park, Md./Albert Einstein) (28:54), Lia Oren (Milwaukee, Wisc./Nicolet) (26:15), Elizabeth Green (23:32), Stull (11:24), Gazzola (9:35), Gabrielle Umstead (Chadds Ford, Pa./Garnet Valley) (7:13), Flinn, Alex DiGiovanni (York, Pa./Dover) (3:16) and Agostino (1:08) to complete the 24-2 win.
Oren and Tice both notched their first collegiate goal in the game.
Abbie McHerron (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills) made her collegiate debut and played the first 30 minutes and made two saves to earn the win while Gillian Sickler (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) played the final 30 minutes and did not face a shot.
Goucher returns to action on Wednesday at Immaculata College. Game time is 4 p.m.
