Stull's Nine Goals Too Much For Randolph In Goucher Women's Lacrosse Victory
BALTIMORE, Md. Shannon Stull (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) did something that hasn't been down by a Goucher College women's lacrosse player in 19 years. The junior registered nine goals and one assist in a 23-5 victory for the Gophers against Randolph College in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Friday.
Stull had matched her career-high in goals with 8:07 left in the first half including a natural hat trick earlier in the half and then she notched her seventh goal with 1:11 left in the first half to set a new career-best. The junior was not done after she scored twice in the second half to finish the game with nine goals and one assist for 10 points. Stull finished the week with 13 goals and three assists for 16 points.
Stull became the first player since Hannah Brown registered 10 points against Southwestern (Texas) on March 19, 2014 to notch 10 points in a game. She is the first player to find the twine eight times since Emily Blatter against Connecticut College on March 21, 2008 and the first player to twinkle the twine nine times in a game for the Gophers since Liz Martin against Villa Julie on April 23, 2001.
Emily Flinn (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry) also had a career night with five goals and three assists for eight points. Flinn has recorded three-straight multi-goal performances and ranks second on the team with 10 goals and six assists for 16 points.
Julia Gazzola (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) added a career-best four goals and matched her personal best with five points. Gazzola is third on the team with nine tallies and five assists for 14 points while leads the team with 33 draw controls. The freshman has hauled in 29 draw controls in her last three games including a career-high 11 on Friday night.
Goucher scored the first three goals of the game. Camryn Agostino (South Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) found the back of the next off a Gazzola feeder 59 seconds into the game. Stull then scored unassisted at 27:51 and off a pass from Flinn at 27:26.
The Wildcats scored the next three goals to tie the game, but Stull then recorded a natural hat trick in a span of two minutes and five seconds after scoring off a feed from Alyssa Long (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) at 20:36 and then unassisted at 18:35 and 18:21 for a 6-3 lead.
Gazzola scored unassisted and Stull set up Flinn for an 8-3 advantage with 16:52 left in the half.
After a Randolph goal, Flinn notched a natural hat trick in a span of one minute and 45 seconds thanks to tallies at 10:24, 9:29 and an 8-meter goal at 8:45. Stull scored two more times sandwiched in between a Gazzola from Flinn score for a 14-4 lead at the break.
The Gophers then racked up the first nine goals of the second half to take a 23-4 lead. Agostino (28:02), Stull (26:10 & 20:15), Gazzola (24:17 & 21.43), Flinn (17:30), Gabrielle Umstead (Chadds Ford, Pa./Garnet Valley) (14:20 & 2:20) and Elizabeth Green (Easton, Pa./Lehigh Valley Charters for the Arts) (9:34) all scored in the run. The Wildcats scored in the closing minute to set the final score at 23-5.
Umstead finished with two goals and an assist while Agostino added two markers in the win.
Lia Oren (Milwaukee, Wisc./Nicolet) had four caused turnovers and three ground balls to pace the defense while Delany Comerford (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) added two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Abbie McHerron (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills) played the first 30 minutes to improve to 3-0 while Gillian Sickler (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) played the final 30 minutes and made two saves.
Goucher, who improved to 3-1 for the first time since 2015, returns to action at home against Notre Dame (Md.) on Wednesday. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
