Goucher Women's Lacrosse Drops Match To Scranton
BALTIMORE, Md. – Goucher College dropped a Landmark Conference women's lacrosse match to the University of Scranton on Saturday. During the starting lineup announcements, members of Parkville Adaptive Lacrosse were introduced with members of the Gophers women's lacrosse team. Prior to the season, Goucher performed a clinic with the organization.
Shannon Stull (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) paced the Gophers with three goals. The junior scored unassisted to tie the game at 2 at the 25:33 and then converted a free position goal at 4:41 left in the first half and then opened the scoring in the second half with an 8-meter tally at 28:53.
Stull now has 20 hat tricks in her career and nine in her junior campaign. She leads the team and ranks third in the conference in goals (46) and fifth in points (57). Stull, who has 110 tallies and 12 assists for 122 points in her career, still needs three draw controls to reach 100 draw controls for her career.
Julia Gazzola (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown), Soleil Gagne (Portsmouth, N.H./Portsmouth), Alyssa Long (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) and Aubrie DiBenedetto (Bristow, Va./Patriot) also found the twine on the afternoon. Gazzola found the back of the net off a feeder from Emily Flinn (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry) at 8:41 in the opening frame. Long (14:27) and DiBenedetto (8:54) both recorded goals in the second half.
Gazzola has scored a goal in all 12 games this season while her multi-goal streak of six-straight games was halted on Saturday. The freshman ranks second on the team with 36 goals and 12 assists for 48 points. Gazzola also recorded five draw controls to give her 79 for the year and move her within four draws of tying Merlo Tersigni's (83, 2008) single season program record.
Long had another good all-around game with a goal and an assist to go along with five draw controls and two ground balls. She has scored in eight-consecutive games including five multi-goal performances in that stretch. Long has 19 goals and nine assists for 28 points this season and 49 markers and 17 assists for 66 points in her three season in a Gopher uniform. Just like Stull, the junior is moving closer to 100 draw controls, needing 11 to reach the mark.
Gagne has nine goals and four assists this season and has registered a goal in five of her last seven matches. She has 23 tallies and five assists for 28 points in her career. DiBenedetto has scored in back-to-back games and has two scores on the year. Flinn, who dished out an assist to Gazzola, ramks third on the team with 19 goals and a team-best 15 assists for 34 points.
Delany Comerford (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) paced the defense with a career-high five ground balls while Gagne and Mackenzie Nase (Weare, N,H./John Stark Regional) each added four ground balls on the afternoon. Comerford has hauled in two or more ground balls six times on the year. The four ground balls for Gagne matched a career high she has reached on three occasions this season and four times in her career while Nase picked up a personal-best four ground balls for the second time in her career.
Abbie McHerron (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills) made 11 saves in 44:33 minutes of action while Gillian Sickler (Alexandria, Va./Potomac) played the final 15:27 and turned away one shot in the loss.
