Gazzola Sets Single-Season Draw Control Mark Against Susquehanna
SELINGROVE, Pa. – Julia Gazzola (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) and Shannon Stull (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) both reached milestones in draw controls for Goucher College in a Landmark Conference women's lacrosse loss to Susquehanna University on Saturday.
Gazzola came into the game needing one draw control to tie Merlo Tersigni's (83, 2008) single-season program record for draws. She grabbed the first draw control of the match to tie Tersigni's mark and then set a new standard when she registered the draw control at 24:10 in the first half. Gazzola finished the game with six draws to give her 88 draw controls on the year.
While Gazzola is now 12 draw controls from 100 this season, Stull was looking to reach the 100 draw benchmark for her career. Needing two draw controls in the match, Stull hulled in her second of the game with 6:15 left in the first half. She finished the game with six draw controls to give her 104 draw controls for her career to go along with 111 goals and 123 points in her career.
Now that you are drawn in, Alyssa Long (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) has 91 draw controls and needs nine more to reach the same mark that Stull accomplished on Saturday.
Camryn Agostino (South Setauket, N.Y./Ward Mellville) and Jordan Tice (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) paced the Gophers offensively with two goals apiece while Long registered a marker and two assists, and Gazzola added a tally and assist in her program-record setting afternoon.
Agostino registered her seventh multi-goal performance of the season and tallied two markers for the eighth time in her career to go along with a career-high pair of hat tricks this season. She ranks fourth on the team with 21 goals and 11 assists for 32 points in 2019 and has 31 markers and 12 assists for 43 points in her career.
Tice notched her second two-tally performance of her career after also scoring twice against Elizabethtown College on March 30. The senior has seven goals and 10 assists for 17 points this season and seven tallies and 12 assists for 19 points in her career.
Tice, Maddie Hernandez (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) and Danielle Nixon (Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) will be honored prior to the women's lacrosse home finale against Juniata College on Friday at Beldon Field. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
Long got the Gophers on the scoreboard off a pass from Emily Flinn (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry) at 16:59.
Goucher closed the half by scoring five of the final seven tallies to go into the break trailing 11-6.
Long set up Tice at 11:09 to start a 4-0 run. Flinn then converted an 8-meter shot at 9:46 and so did Aubrie DiBenedetto (Bristow, Va./Patriot) at 7:43 before Agostino scored unassisted at 6:39. After a River Hawks marker, Agostino found the back of the net off a Long pass at 2:58.
Gazzola notched the first tally of the final frame for the Gophers on a free-position chance at 25:55. Flinn feed Tice for her second goal of the day at 14:03 before Elizabeth Green (Easton, Pa./Lehigh Valley Charters for the Arts) found the back of the net unassisted at 7:47. Gazzola connected with Mackenzie Nase (Weare, N.H./John Stark Regional) at 5:31 to complete the scoring in a 19-10 loss to Susquehanna.
Abbie McHerron (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills) made 13 saves for the Gophers.
