Stull-Umstead Tandem Registers Seven-First Half Goals To Put Chink In Knights Armor In 15-5 Goucher Women's Lacrosse Win
ASHTON, Pa. – Shannon Stull (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) and Gabrielle Umstead (Chadds Ford, Pa./Garnet Valley) combined for nine goals including seven tallies in the first half to power Goucher College past Neumann University 15-5 in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Saturday.
Stull notched a season-high five goals and added an assist for six points. After going 1-for-12 at 8-meter shots on the year, the senior went 3-for-5 in the game on Saturday. It marks her eighth five-goal performance, 24th game with at least three goals and 29th multigoal performance in her career. After scoring one goal in her first two matches, Stull has registered at least a hat trick in her last three contests.
Umstead posted four markers to notch her third career hat trick and her first multigoal performance since she registered a career-best five markers against Whittier on March 19, 2018. It was also her fifth multigoal performance of her career.
Julia Gazzola (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) added two goals and six draw controls. The sophomore has recorded at least two goals in all five games this season and the 14th-multigoal performance of her career. Gazzola hauled in at least six draw controls for the second time this season and 11th time in her two seasons in Baltimore.
Goucher scored seven-straight goals to take a 7-1 lead. Stull tied the game at 1 with an 8-meter tally at 26:46 and then the senior converted another free shot at 25:48 for a 2-1.
Umstead came around the cage and found the top netting at 20:08 and then notched a free-position goal at 19:30 for a 4-1 lead. Stull twinkled the twine at 17:19 to complete her hat trick and Umstead followed suit with an unassisted tally at 15:35 before Stull found the twine unassisted at 12:13 for a six-goal advantage.
After the Knights scored two goals, Gazzola converted an 8-meter shot at 2:49 and Stull passed the ball ahead to Emily Flinn (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry), who found the.netting from the left side with 2:07 on the clock to hand Goucher a 9-3 lead at the break.
Neuman scored the first tally of the second half only to see the Gophers register the next four tallies. Flinn set up Mackenzie Nase (Weare, N.H./John Stark Regional) at 22:41 before Gazzola scored unassisted at 14:23. Camryn Agostino (South Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) twinkled the twine unassisted at 12:17 before Umstead beat a defender and raced to score her fourth goal of the evening after taking a pass from Alyssa Long (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) at 11:44 to cap the run and hand Goucher a 13-4 advantage.
The Knights momentarily halted the Gophers' offensive run, but the visitors scored the final two goals to earn a 15-5 win. Stull notched her fifth tally of the day on an 8-meter opportunity with 1:08 remaining before Katie Carrigan (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point) sealed the win when she went left to right and found the twine with 37 seconds left for her first collegiate score.
Abbie McHerron (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills) made eight saves to help Goucher improve to 3-2 on the year. Delany Comerford (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) paced the defense with three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Long added six draw controls and two ground balls.
The Gophers return to action on Tuesday at Notre Dame University of Maryland. Game time is 4 p.m.
