TOWSON, Md. — Sam Schlosburg (North Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wootton) successfully converted a penalty kick just 7:19 into this afternoon's game to provide Goucher with a quick 1-0 lead over Philadelphia Biblical. The Gophers were able to tack on four additional goals and coast to their second victory of the 2010 season, a decisive 5-0 triumph over the visiting Crimson Eagles.
Sarah Eaby (New Holland, Pa./Lancaster Country Day School) set up Goucher's only other goal before halftime by delivering the ball to Katherine Matthew-Parker (New Orleans, La./St. Martin's Episcopal), who ripped a shot from outside the box that went in off the post at 38:23.
Sisley Pumilia (Spofford, N.H./Keene) had a hand in all three of the goals the Gophers (2-5-1) tallied in the second period. She put her team ahead 3-0 with an unassisted goal at 49:24 and 4-0 when she handled a short pass in the top of the box from Kristen Gartside (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) and danced around the goalkeeper before taking an uncontested shot that found the mark at 70:17.
Pumilia picked up her third assist of the season — to go along with her team-high five goals — when she found Shay Kettner (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) with a long pass from midfield that Kettner was able to carry into the box and go 1-on-1 with the goalie.
In suffering their seventh consecutive loss since a 3-2 win over Valley Forge Christian on Sept. 8, the Crimson Eagles (1-9) were out-shot, 18-7.
Kellen Matthews (Northboro, Mass./Algonquin Regional), already the all-time leader in saves and shutouts in the history of Goucher's women's soccer program, needed to make only two saves to earn the 13th shutout of her career.
Both of Goucher's victories so far this season have been
against teams from the Colonial States Athletic Conference. Back on
Sept. 18, they defeated Notre Dame (Md.), 4-1.
