Sept. 7 – TOWSON, Md. – The Goucher College women's soccer team continued their hot start, using a two-goal performance from senior Sam Turner to defeat Notre Dame (Md.) by a 2-0 score on Wednesday evening.
The Gophers (2-0-1) held the Gators scoreless for the 90-minute period, marking the second shutout by the team in the first three games. Overall, Goucher has allowed just one goal in 290 total minutes of game time.
Turner earned her first-collegiate multi-goal performance in the victory, accounting for the entirety of the offensive production throughout the game. After neither team could break through in the opening 40 minutes, Turner found a way in the 41st. The senior received a pass from Alexa Stewart and placed it in the back of the net to give the Gophers a 1-0 lead.
The shot was just one of 11 on the day for Turner, who set a new career-high for herself (previous high of nine.) It was also more than enough for the Goucher defense.
The Gophers allowed just three total shots throughout the course of the evening, with none of them becoming a threat to score.
Just over ten minutes into the second half, Turner notched her second of the game, this time making her own way to the net. The senior took an initial shot and, once it was deflected by the keeper, stayed with the play to put the ball in the back of the net and extend the advantage to 2-0.
Goucher allowed just two more shots in the second stanza, outshooting the Gators by a final total of 26-3. Along with Turner's 11, Theresa Antkowiak-Tassone added five shots, while Isabel Suazo totaled three. In the team's last two games, the Gophers have tilted the field considerably in their favor, outshooting their opponents by a total of 38-8.
The Gopher's defense has been outstanding through the first trio of matches, ranking first in the Landmark Conference in goals-allowed average (0.31). Goucher also remains just one of two undefeated teams in the Landmark at 2-0-1.
Goucher will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 10 as they return to Beldon field to play host to Carin University. The matchup with the Highlanders is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
