GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – Megan Kelleher (Lafayette, N.J./High Point Regional) scored the game-winning goal in overtime of her collegiate debut to propel Goucher College past Gwynedd Mercy University 1-0 in the non-conference women's soccer season opener for both teams on Friday.
After a scoreless standstill in regulation, the two teams moved to the extra session. Gracie LeFevre (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) took a pass with a defender on her and passed it back to Kelleher, who then found the high netting from outside the box for the decisive tally at 93:28 to give the Gophers the win against Gwynedd Mercy in the season opener for the second-straight campaign.
Christina Charikofsky (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) made three saves in the winning effort. Two of Charikosky's stops came in the final 10 minutes of regulation in the 82nd and 84th minutes.
The Gophers outshot Gwynedd Mercy 6-2 in the final 20 minutes of the game. LeFevre had the final scoring chance in regulation, but her shot was turned away with 2:59 left until overtime.
Freshmen Claudia Roller and Olivia Chinitz (Brooklyn, N.Y./Parker Collegiate Institute) both had scoring chances to start overtime, but missed on both chances to set up Kelleher's heroics.
Along with Chinitz, Kelleher and Roller, Daniella Blitz (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) also made her collegiate debut in the match.
Goucher improved to 2-0-1 in season openers under head coach Stephanie Ricketts.
The Gophers turn to action on Sunday in their 2019 home debut against Hood. Match time is 3 p.m.
