BALTIMORE, Md. – Goucher College played a great match on Wednesday night in front of the Beldon Field faithful. Most in the stands would say the Gophers outplayed Alvernia, but a penalty kick goal in the second half helped the Golden Wolves eek out a 1-0 win in non-conference women's soccer action on Tuesday.
Christina Charikofsky (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) made two saves on the evening while Gracie LeFevre (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) posted six shots including four on goal.
Goucher's best chance to score might have come in the waning moments of the game. The Gophers had four shots in the final three minutes and 30 seconds of the match. Olivia Chinitz (Brooklyn, N.Y./Parker Collegiate Institute) almost tied the game up at 1 with 2:02 remaining, but a diving stop from the Alvernia netminder kept the ball from twinkling the twine while LeFevre had a shot turned away with 29 seconds remaining.
Goucher outshot the Golden Wolves 11-5 in the match, but was also called for eight offsides.
The Gophers return to action when they start a three-game road trip at Widener on Saturday. Match time is 6 p.m.
