A Day To Remember For Belmont And The Goucher Women's Soccer Team With 2-0 Win Against Juniata
BALTIMORE, Md. – Kendall Belmont (Portland, Ore./David Douglas) had a special game on Saturday. First her family was in town to watch her play from Oregon and then she scored the decisive goal to propel Goucher College past Juniata College 2-0 in Landmark Conference women's soccer action on Saturday.
Belmont took a pass from Lily Shaffer (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) and found the twine for the first time this season at the 38:04 mark. Maybe you could say that Belmont had a lucky day with her parents and the tally because she was also a Juniata kick out of bounds of being substituted for in the lineup so her timing was impeccable. It was her third goal of her career after she had two tallies in her sophomore campaign.
In the second half, Alyssa Hodnik (Pittsburgh, Pa./Kiski Area) hit one of her patented line drive corner kicks that was deflected off the netminder and found the head of Megan Kelleher (Lafayette, N.J./High Point Regional) and the back of the netting to increase the Gopher lead to 2-0 at the 56:40 mark.
Kelleher fuels the team with three goals and one assist for seven points while Hodnik is second with a tally and three helpers for five points and Shaffer is third with three assists for three points.
Christina Charikofsky (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) earned her second shutout of the season and sixth of her career.
Belmont's goal ended a 398 minutes and four seconds scoring drought for the Baltimore program. The win also ended a 14-game winless streak in conference play. After defeating Drew University 3-1 in the final game of the 2016 regular season on October 29, 2016, the Gophers went 0-12-2 with ties against Drew and Juniata last season for their only non-losses before Saturday's win against the Eagles.
Goucher returns to action at Catholic on Wednesday night. Match time is 7 p.m.
