September 17, 2016 – FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Gophers saw their second loss of the season after falling 3-0 today to the Mary Washington Eagles. The game started out even, with both teams finding the final third. MWU connected and found the net at the 11:12 mark when sophomore Marisa Madaras set up senior Maryfay Jackson for a breakaway through Goucher’s defense.
The score was 1-0 at the half with Goucher coming out of the gates strong finding 4 shots in 2 minutes. Both teams nailed good shots off the crossbar, but it was the Eagles that would score again at the 64:36 mark on a goal from Emily Arbisi.
The Gophers pushed numbers forward toward the end of the second half to salvage a couple goals, but left the back line vulnerable, which the Eagles capitalized on in the final seconds of the game, making the score 3-0.
“This was a disappointing result for us today,” said head coach Tati Korba. “I think we are a better team than we’ve shown in the last two games. It’s important that we hit some bumps early in the season and learn from them as we prepare for conference next week.”
The Gophers are back at home on Wednesday night against the Rosemont Ravens at 7:00 PM.
