TOWSON, Md. – It wasn't until the eighth event
that Bethany Natoli (Alexandria,
Va./O'Connell) broke through and provided Goucher with its
initial first-place performance of this evening's meet against
Washington (Md.). By that time, the Shoremen (7-2) were well on
their way to a 119-73 triumph over head coach Tom Till's Gophers.
Natoli's victory was in the 100-yard breaststroke and her winning time of 1:05.77 allowed her to beat out Kimber Shoemaker of the Shoremen by 17-hundredths of a second.
Once the Shoremen backed off and started swimming exhibitions, the Gophers (5-5) picked up first place in one more individual event and also a relay: Sam Sutherland (North Reading, Mass./Austin Prep) collected nine points for Goucher with her effort in the 100 breast (1:16.85) and the quartet of Victoria Adinolfi (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie), Rachel Leavitt-Baron (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Academy), Natoli and Sandy Okun (Stevenson, Md./McDonogh School) was awarded first place (1:55.24) and 11 points in the 200 free relay.
The Gophers, who suffered their third loss in a row, produced the runner-up in three contested individual events: Judith Stern (Reisterstown, Md./Grier School) in the 1000 free (13:25.44), Britt Hogstrom (Killington, Vt./Woodstock Union) in the 200 free (2:08.89) and Sutherland in the 100 free (:58.83).
