Gophers' Fate Against Eagles Comes Down to Final Event

SCRANTON, Pa. — Goucher had no shot at catching Scranton, but the Gophers were locked in a 44-44 tie with Juniata heading into the final event of today's tri-meet involving the three Landmark Conference schools.
The Royals (3-2, 2-0 Landmark), who produced the first-place performer in all nine individual events, entered two foursomes in the 200-yard freestyle relay and took the top two spots to complete victories over both the Gophers, 58-37, and the Eagles, 58-33.
Juniata's entry in the 200 free relay beat out Goucher's for third place by slightly more than 3.2 seconds, allowing the Eagles (3-5, 1-1 Landmark) to squeeze past head coach Tom Till's Gophers, 51-44.
The highest finish by a Goucher swimmer was second place by junior Victoria Adinolfi (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) in the 500-yard freestyle. She completed the event in 5:51.19.
Adinolfi also placed third in the 200 individual medley (2:28.65).
Other third-place performances for the Gophers (1-5, 0-4 Landmark): Sarah Pardus (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) in the 50 free (:27.58) and 100 free (1:00.93), Lindsey Phillipson-Weiner (Merion, Pa./Lower Merion) in the 100 backstroke (1:10.07) and 100 breaststroke (1:18.71), Sarah Eastland (Sebastopol, Calif./Analy) in the 100 butterfly (1:10.48) and the 200 medley relay (2:10.73).
