BOYDS, Md. — With her runner-up finish in today's 1650-yard freestyle at the Landmark Swim Championships, Goucher's Alexis Regopoulos (Fitchburg, Mass./North Middlesex Regional) broke her second school record of the weekend.
This one had stood for 21 years, and the freshman emphatically placed herself in the record book by taking 20 seconds off Selina Sanchez' mark from 1994. Regopoulos touched in at 18:12.03 in the mile race, over 21 seconds ahead of Susquehanna's Lindsey VanKirk in third, and earned 17 points for the Gophers.
Goucher would eventually end the championship with 187 points, putting the program ahead of both Juniata and Elizabethtown in the final team standings.
The 1650 was the first of six women's finals contested tonight. The 200 backstroke followed on the schedule, and Kellyn Brower (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) tallied an additional five points for the Gophers with her 12th place finish in the event. Brower completed the race in 2:21.92.
Next came the 100 free, where Lizzy Hannifin (Denver, Colo./East) (56.58 – 12th) tacked on five more points with a personal best effort. Nicole Craver (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove Area) then became the third straight Goucher swimmer to finish 12th in an event, picking up five more points after finishing the 200 breast in 2:36.87 to conclude her individual collegiate career.
The Gophers concluded the championships with an eighth-place showing in the 400 free relay. Craver, Brower, Kyanna Cadwallader (Gainesville, Fla./Gainesville) and Hannifin clocked in 3:48.79, over eight seconds faster than their seed time, to earn a final 22 points.
Susquehanna ran away with the conference title for a fifth-consecutive season. The Crusaders tallied a Landmark-record 844 points, well ahead of Catholic (629) in second place.
