Gophers Go 1-2 in Six Events, Clamp Down on Gators

Alexis Regopoulos (Fitchburg, Mass./North Middlesex Regional) accounted for two of the eight first-place performances in individual events by Goucher swimmers. She broke the existing pool record in the 1,000-yard freestyle established in 2004 by Stephanie Danner from Gallaudet (11:00.59) with her winning time of 10:55.94, plus she took first place in the 200 free (2:05.53) and second in the 160 individual medley (1:52.69).
Molly Brenton (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Twp.) also touched first in two events, winning the 40-yard backstroke (:23.66) and the 40 butterfly (:22.35).
Marykate Malone (Gales Ferry, Conn./Ledyard) was the first to complete the 40-yard breaststroke (:29.97); Rachel Kieffer (Granada Hills, Calif./Reseda) took first place in the 200 back (2:32.10). Lizzy Hannifin (Denver, Colo./East) was clocked at :57.84 in the 100 free and Nikki Lynch (Brunswick, Maine/SSHL (Sweden)) at 6:26.46 in the 500 free, both good for first place.
Madeleine Moss (New Braunfels, Texas/New Braunfels) was the runner-up behind one of her teammates in the 200 free (2:37.47) and 200 back (2:56.29). Ivelisse Rivera (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) completed a 1-2 finish by the Gophers (5-3) in the 40 back by completing the event in :32.10.
Sydney Patterson (Dallas, Texas/Woodrow Wilson) took second place behind Malone in the 40 breast with her time of :30.46; Kyanna Cadwallader (Gainesville, Fla./Gainesville) was runner-up to Hannifin in the 100 free by 1.22 seconds as she recorded a time of :59.06.
Patterson also was runner-up in the 200 breast (3:03.15). Samantha Epworth (Fair Oaks, Calif./Bella Vista) and Paige Harris (Baltimore, Md./Lexington) both picked up three points for the Gophers with second-place finishes: for Epworth, it was in the 200 butterfly (2:40.00); for Harris, the 40 free (:27.75).
Emily Jordan placed first in three individual events for Notre Dame.
The Gophers outscored the Gators (3-1), 14-0, in the two relays.
Goucher's first home meet of the 2015-16 season will take place Saturday at 1 p.m. when the Gophers welcome Catholic to the von Borries Aquatic Center.
