Goucher managed to pull off a sweep of the six singles matches
today on the way to an 8-1 triumph over York.
Only Carly Heinz (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) and Mara Bergman (Summit, N.J./Summit) were able to win in straight sets: Heinz, competing at No. 2, pinned a 6-0, 6-1 setback on York's Paige Doutrich; Bergman chalked up her team-leading 11th singles win of the season by downing Stephanie Nelson of the Spartans 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6.
In improving to 9-1 in singles play this season, Chloe Scott-Giry (Amagansett, N.Y./The Ross School) won the first set of her match at fifth singles, lost the second but came back to finish off York's Megan Logan 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.
In the other three matches, the Goucher player came back from being down a set: at No. 1, Tanya Cooley (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) defeated Katelyn Acker 4-6, 6-1, 7-5; at No. 3, Mouna Attarha (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) turned back Heidi Acker 5-7, 6-4, 6-3; and at No. 4, Joan Pulupa (Gaithersburg, Md./Richard Montgomery) earned a 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory over Keturah Buchanan.
The Spartans (1-8) picked up their only point of the match with a win at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2, Pulupa and Scott-Giry were partners in an 8-3 win over Buchanan and Logan and, at No. 3, Attarha and Bergman downed Nelson and Heidi Acker, 8-3.
With the victory, the Gophers (9-2) extended their winning streak to six matches.
