TOWSON, Md. — After closing out 2013-14 with a perfect Landmark Conference record in both singles and doubles, Amanda Bercovici (Hackensack, N.J./Bergen Tech) was recognized as the conference's Women's Tennis Player of the Week for a fourth time this season.
Bercovici becomes the first women's tennis player in Landmark history to earn the award four times in a single season. Last week, she picked up singles and doubles victories over Susquehanna and Juniata.
Against the Crusaders, Bercovici helped the Gophers edge out a 6-3 victory. First, she teamed with Alex Walsh (Greens Farm, Conn./Staples) to collect Goucher's only point in doubles, as the pair bested Shelby O'Riley and Brielle Ferlauto by an 8-3 margin. Bercovici then rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over O'Riley at the No. 1 singles position.
That singles victory was her 20th of the season, tying her with Ariel Lin for the most single-season wins in Goucher history. Bercovici passed Lin with a 7-5, 6-0 defeat of Juniata's Heather Waring last Thursday. She ends the season with a 21-4 record in singles matches, including wins in all six conference matchups.
Bercovici and Walsh also closed out a perfect conference season with an 8-1 defeat of Waring and Megan Phillips in the doubles portion of Thursday's match. The tandem finished 12-3 overall, with all matches coming from the No. 1 spot. Bercovici is the first Gopher to go undefeated in both singles and doubles conference matches since Meaghan Lee in 2010-11.
Despite those two victories, Goucher was ultimately bested 5-4 by Juniata, coming up just short of the fourth and final Landmark playoff spot. All-Conference announcements for both men's and women's tennis are scheduled to be released on Wednesday, April 30.
