TOWSON, Md. — Goucher's Landmark playoff chances took a hit this afternoon with a 9-0 home defeat to Catholic.
The Cardinals (12-5, 4-3 Landmark) currently hold the fourth and final playoff spot in the conference. The Gophers (5-6, 1-3 Landmark) remain tied in the loss column with three matches still left on the schedule, but they would now lose the head-to-head tiebreaker with today's visitors.
Alice Goldstein-Plesser (Durham, N.C./Durham School of the Arts) and Leigh Oehrig (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) came closest to earning a point during the doubles portion of the match, but the duo ultimately suffered an 8-5 defeat to Maria Flores and Sarah MacLean at No. 3.
Oehrig was also the lone Goucher player to take a set in singles. Competing at the No. 6 spot, she took the first set over Flores by a 6-2 score. Flores, though, responded with a 6-2 second-set win, and she claimed the super tiebreaker by a 10-7 margin. Kelsey Turner (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends) took Laura Torsiello to a second-set tiebreaker in her 6-1, 7-6 (2) defeat at No. 2.
Today marked the final home contest of the season for the Gophers. They will next be in action at Elizabethtown for a 3 p.m. matchup on Wednesday.
