It was the bottom half of the singles lineup that earned all three points for the Gophers. Kirsten Cianci (Bolton, Conn./Bolton), who was at No. 4, secured the first point for head coach Sally Baum's squad by rallying from being down a set to bounce Courtney Barron 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (2).
Alice Goldstein-Plesser (Durham, N.C./Durham School of the Arts) and Leigh Oehrig (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) accounted for Goucher's remaining two wins in singles play. Goldstein-Plesser raised her singles record this season to 8-6 by knocking off Emily Machado 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5; Oehrig defeated Maura Tyrrell 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6.
Scranton, which had already been tagged as the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Landmark Conference championship tournament prior to today's match, owned a 3-0 lead heading into the singles competition thanks to a sweep of the three doubles matches. At No. 1, Emily Walsh and Julia Frattaroli recorded an 8-3 victory over Alex Walsh (Greens Farm, Conn./Staples) and Cianci.
Megan Azzalina clinched the overall match for the Royals (11-3, 6-1 Landmark) with her 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Alex Walsh at No. 1.
Despite a 7-5, 0-6, 1-0 (4) loss to Lisa-Marie Lanciotti at No. 3, Emily Ruff (Easton, Md./Easton) finished with a 9-10 record to lead the Gophers (5-9, 1-6 Landmark) in singles wins.
