Gophers Take Second Conference Loss Despite Early Lead
The Goucher College women’s tennis team (4-8, Landmark 1-2) took the Drew Rangers to the final match in a 5-4 loss at home on Sunday afternoon.
TOWSON, Md. – The Goucher College women's tennis team (4-8, Landmark 1-2) took the Drew Rangers to the final match in a 5-4 loss at home on Saturday afternoon.
The Gophers took an early lead after doubles play, 2-1. The senior duo of Alice Goldstein-Plesser (Durham, N.C.) and Leigh Oehrig (Woodbine, Md.) earned the first win for Goucher, 8-4. Drew bounced back at No. 3 doubles with an 8-5 win, but the Gophers quickly pulled ahead with a 9-8 (7-3) win from junior Mackenzie Donohue (Bronx, N.Y.) and sophomore Ali Tomasevich (Harleysville, Pa.).
The Rangers pulled out ahead in singles play, winning at No. 2 and No. 1 singles, respectively. However, Oehrig knotted the match up, 3-3, after win 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) win over Jessica Cheng. First-year Ali Gorson-Morrow also pitched in with a win over Cristinia Riccio 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 to give Goucher the lead.
Drew's Maria Navas Espinal tied the match 4-4 with a win at No. 5 singles, and Goucher was unable to seal the match with a win at No. 6 singles.
