Women’s Tennis Splits Doubleheader to Wrap up Fall Play
The Goucher women’s tennis team took on Penn State Harrisburg and Messiah College on Saturday in a doubleheader.
TOWSON, Md. - The Goucher women's tennis team took on Penn State Harrisburg and Messiah College on Saturday in a doubleheader. The team bested Penn State Harrisburg 8-1 then lost to Messiah 6-1.
Against Penn State Harrisburg the Gophers #3 doubles team of Morgan Hartman (Woodstock, Vt.) and Meera Balasubramanian (Bel Air, Md.) got the team off to a good start with an 8-3 victory over Maria Torre and Sheila Ansary. They were followed by the #1 doubles team for Goucher Mandile Mpofu (Harare, Zimbabwe ) and Ali Gorson-Marrow (Broomall, Pa.), who won their match 8-3 against Sydney Nye and Soorya Chittibabu. In the last doubles match at #2 Goucher's Miranda Egan-Brooks (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Ali Tomasevich (Harleysville, Pa.) prevailed 8-2 over Penn State Harrisburg's Courtney Bennett and Abby Clifford.
In singles play Egan-Brooks was the first to finish with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Bennett, followed by Mpofu at #1 singles, who won her match 6-1, 6-3 against Nye. Gorson-Marrow then lost a close match to Penn State's Torre 7-5, 6-7 (5) 10-8 in the super tiebreaker for the 3rd set. Katie Marzerka (Wolfeboro, N.H.)at #5 singles then picked up a win for Goucher with a 6-1, 6-1 score over Clifford. In the last two singles matches #4 Tomasevich picked up a Goucher win 4-6, 6-2 10-6 over Chittibabu and #6 Hartman defeated Ansary 6-4, 6-1.
The second match against Messiah began with a win for the visitors at #3 doubles where Amanda Adams and Gabby Brooks beat Hartman and Balasubramanian 8-3. At #2 doubles Egan-Brooks and Tomasevich lost to Kaitlyn Russell and Emily Chert 8-5. At #1 doubles Mpofu and Gorson-Marrow picked up the only Gopher win of the match with an 8-6 defeat of Kelly Hopkins and Carly Dore.
As twilight descended Dove started the singles wins for Messiah defeating Egan-Brooks 6-2, 6-3. That was followed by Wichirt taking out the Gophers' Tomasevich 6-1, 6-1, which gave the visitors their 5th point of the match. Gorson-Marrow lost a good match at #2 singles to Russell 6-4, 6-3 and Mpofu was taken down by Hopkins 7-5, 6-2. The final 2 matches were cut short because of darkness, with Marzerka trailing 2-6, 1-2 and Balasubramanian down 3-6, 2-1.
Women's tennis continues their season in the spring, opening up on March 3 away against Washington College.
