Women’s Tennis Edges Penn State Abington, 5-4
ABINGTON, Pa. - The Goucher College women’s tennis team won two of three doubles matches, and swept the four through six spots in the singles line-up to edge out Penn State Abington on Saturday, 5-4.
ABINGTON, Pa. - The Goucher College women's tennis team won two of three doubles matches, and swept the four through six spots in the singles line-up to edge out Penn State Abington on Saturday, 5-4.
With the win, the Gophers moved to 2-6 overall on the year, while Penn State Abington fell to 1-5 with the defeat.
In doubles, Goucher went into singles play up 2-1 after winning in the second and third spots in the lineup.
At number two, the tandem of junior Miranda Egan-Brooks (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and first-year Morgan Hartman (Woodstock, Vermont) gutted out an 8-7 (7-1) win, while at number three, sophomore Katie Marzerka (Wolfeboro, N.H.) and junior Meera Balasubramanian (Bel Air, Md.) rolled to an 8-2 victory.
In singles, Penn State Abington roared back, taking victories in the top three spots of the line-up to take a 4-2 lead on the Gophers. But, Goucher came back, winning at number four, five, and six to take the match by one.
At number four singles, Marzerka became a two-time winner with a come-from-behind three-set win (3-6, 6-2, 6-1), while in the five spot, Hartman collected a 6-0, 6-0 win. Finally, at number six, Balasubramanian cliched the win for Goucher with a 7-5, 6-2 victory.
The Goucher College women's tennis team returns to action on Thursday, traveling to Albright. First serve is set for 3:30 p.m.
