Women's Tennis Opens 2018-19 Campaign with 6-3 Defeat at Rutgers-Camden

CAMDEN, N.J. - The Goucher College women's tennis team opened their 2018-19 season on Sunday at Rutgers-Camden, where the Gophers dropped a 6-3 decision to the host Scarlet Raptors.

In the defeat, Rutgers-Camden got the day started by sweeping all three doubles contest to take a 3-0 lead. Goucher, however, did not go down without a fight in two of the three matches contested in doubles, losing at number one and number three, 8-7, on tiebreakers.

Singles began strong for Goucher, as first-year Anais Gill was victorious in the number two position in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. After Rutgers-Camden recorded their first win at singles in the top spot, sophomore Morgan Hartman (Woodstock, Vt.) was a 6-2, 7-5 winner at number six to keep Goucher in the match.

However, Rutgers-Camden clinched the victory with wins at four and three singles, winning both matches in three sets. Goucher salvaged the day with a win at number five singles, as senior Ali Tomasevich (Harleysville, Pa.) was a three-set winner (2-6, 6-3, 6-4).

The Goucher College women's tennis team returns to action on Friday, as they travel back to New Jersey for a match at Kean. First serve is set for 4:30 p.m.
