Women's Tennis Blanks Kean, 9-0, for First Victory of Year
UNION, N.J. - The Goucher College women's tennis team collected their first win of the 2018-19 season on Thursday afternoon, as the Gophers shutout host Kean, 9-0, on the road.
UNION, N.J. - The Goucher College women's tennis team collected their first win of the 2018-19 season on Thursday afternoon, as the Gophers shutout host Kean, 9-0, on the road.
With the win, Goucher evened their record on the year to 1-1, while Kean fell to 0-3 in the loss.
The day got off to a great start for Goucher in doubles, where they swept all three matches to take a 3-0 lead into singles.
The first tandem to pick up a win was the team of sophomore Morgan Hartman (Woodstock, Vt.) and senior Meera Balasubramanian (Bel Air, Md.) was an 8-4 winner at number three. At number two doubles, first-year Haddie Hill (San Antonio, Texas) and senior Ali Tomasevich (Harleysville, Pa.) also grabbed an 8-4 win.
The sweep of doubles was completed by the team of first-year Anais Gill and junior Mandile Mpofu (Harare, Zimbabwe) at number one, who took an 8-5 victory.
It was more of the same for the Gophers in singles, where each individual won their match in straight sets.
Gill (6-1, 6-0 at number one), Mpofu (6-1, 6-0 at number two), Hill (6-0, 6-0 at number three), Tomasevich (6-1, 6-1 at number five) and Hartman (6-0, 6-1 at number six) were all two-time winners in the day in straight set victories. Meanwhile, junior Katie Marzerka (Wolfeboro, N.H.) rounded out the sweep for Goucher with a 7-5, 6-0 win at number four.
The Goucher College women's tennis team returns to action on Wednesday, as they travel to York. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
