Tomasevich Helps Goucher Women's Tennis Clinch Spot In Postseason With Two Wins Against Susquehanna On Senior Day
BALTIMORE, Md. - Ali Tomasevich (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) won two matches on her senior day to propel Goucher College past Susquehanna University and into the Landmark Conference postseason thanks to its 9-0 win in conference women's tennis action on Saturday.
In the final regular season conference home match of the season, Tomasevich and Meera Balasubramanian (Bel Air, Md./Oldfields) were honored before the match to recognize their hard work and dedication to the Gophers tennis program for the last four years.
After the ceremony, Tomasevich got back to the business at hand in beating Susquehanna to move one step closer to clinching a Landmark Conference postseason berth. Goucher improved to 3-3 on the year in league play to move a game ahead of both Catholic University of America (2-4) and Drew University (2-4) in the standings and the squad holds the head-to-head tiebreaker with both teams thanks to 6-3 victories in the regular season meetings against each opponent. The Gophers, who have three matches left in the regular season, will be in the Landmark Conference semifinals on the road on Wednesday, May 1.
Tomasevich and Ali Gorson-Morrow (Broomall, Pa./Barrack Hebrew Academy) won at No. 3 doubles 8-3 to help the Gophers sweep the three doubles matches. The senior then won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 singles to celebrate senior day with two wins. Tomasevich improved to 7-3 on the year in doubles and 5-2 in singles play while registering her 18th career win in both singles and doubles for a combined 36 career wins.
"This is a great team win for us and its made even more special because it was our senior day," said first-year head coach Steve Baum. "Ali and Meera have sacrificed so much of their time to the program and this win was for them."
Anais Gill (Cambridge, England/Hills Road Sixth Form College) and Mandile Mpofu (Harare, Zimbabwe/Arundel School) won at No. 1 doubles 8-1 and Haddie Hill (San Antonio, Texas/The Episcopal School of Texas) and Tes DeJaeger (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) took care of business at No. 3 doubles, 8-3.
Gill grinded out a three-setter at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 0-6, 6-2 and Hill won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Morgan Hartman (Woodstock, Vt./Woodstock Union) completed the 9-0 win with a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles.
"I'm proud of how much we continue to improve each day and it shows with our recent results," said Baum.
